The are four phases during your menstrual cycle.

The first phase is called The Menses.

Menses is the scientific word for the bleeding time of the month. Those 3 - 7 days when the built-up lining of blood and tissue inside your uterus (or womb) comes out through the vagina. You may have pain in your lower belly right before you start bleeding and it may continue for the first few days of your period, or it may not. This is called ďcrampsĒ and itís normal to get them and itís normal if you donít.

Cramps can be mild, moderate or severe. If they really hurt, a hot bath or a heating pad on your abdomen can help. Light exercise, like bike riding or jogging, might also help.
